Anna Goldrich, Sauvie Island Center
Kids these days! Kids these days grow up in a different environment from most of us with more time spent indoors and more time in front of screens. How does that shape their experience with food and nature? What does that mean for their health and how could it impact Oregon’s economy? Will it change the character of our state over time?
Each year the Sauvie Island Center hosts thousands of kids for a day of hands-on exploration of an organic farm, helping kids make the connection between food, farming and the land. They harvest and snack their way through the day while rotating through activities designed to reinforce Next Generation Science Standards for their grade levels. For more than half of the kids each year, it is their first time on a farm, first time tasting and liking vegetables that grow well in our climate and for many it is the only day of the school year spent outside in nature.
Join us to hear how Sauvie Island Center programs, in partnership with other local efforts, can help to cultivate the next generation of healthy eaters, nature lovers, voters and consumers.
