Join us for this exclusive pre-conference PNSQC webinar Inconvenient Truth: SDLC (including Agile) is just one facet of quality when acquiring enterprise systems with Ying Ki Kwong, Statewide QA Program Manager, Oregon Office of the State CIO, on Friday, September 21st at 9 am PDT.
The Agile Manifesto reminds me of another manifesto. If human nature were without flaw, every software company would insist on assigning its best to interact and collaborate closely with its customer’s best, responding to change dynamically as a cohesive team, and delivering working software that meets business needs. I know, it’s easy to imagine if I try. But, I am not a dreamer, and I am not the only one… In the world of large organizations acquiring enterprise systems from integrators, good intentions and idealism must be replaced with realistic expectations and pragmatism. An acquiring organization needs to manage quality and risks differently than a development organization.
This webinar will begin with a keynote on quality management challenges faced by large organizations when acquiring enterprise systems. I will describe the context of a “mega project” whose objective is to transform an enterprise, the possibility of unstable requirements, and the fundamental tension between change control vs. beneficial changes. I will discuss the oxymoronic “subject matter experts” — who are experts of “as is” processes to be changed, not necessarily “to be” processes to be implemented, and may give rise to the sort of organizational dynamics that leads to unnecessarily complex software. After the ‘formal’ webinar, I look forward to a conversation with our PNSQC program chair Phil Lew on what can be done to deal with these challenges.
