IPv6 was developed as a solution to extend and eventually replace IPv4’s capabilities. With the proliferation of smart devices and the IoT devices in an ISP’s consumer home network, the address pool provided by IPv4 is soon exhausting. A lot of ISPs have started transitioning their networks to support IPv6. However, there is less focus on the security vulnerabilities that IPv6 can introduce in a home network. While enterprise networks continue to evolve and secure their IPv6 networks, due to several transition and deployment issues, the home networks might be left unguarded if the potential security implications are not properly addressed. Since IPv6 adaption is still new, the scarcity of IPv6 tools to monitor/report the network security can lead to delayed responses in case of a network attack. Most of the home network security solutions are still catching up to IPv6 and this will mean that majority of the security solutions installed in a consumer home might be supported only for IPv4 networks.
This paper will discuss the security challenges introduced with IPv6 and some of the attacks possible in an IPv6 home network. This will also cover how IPv6 should be prioritized while developing any security solutions to the consumer devices/home networks.
