As software continues to eat the world, development teams have been left with little choice but to become increasingly competitive. There’s competition to attract and retain good team members. There’s there’s the competition to build lasting valuable products that meet the customer and excite the team. Team leads help to define the ‘why’, “what’, and ‘when’ of the product roadmap. Equally important is to find competitive advantages in team work to build faster, better and more accurate product to the vision and customer expectations.
These competitive advantages align neatly with the overall goals of shipping quality product in a timely-fashion.

Team intelligence describes the ability of a group of individuals to tackle and manage complex and non-routine situations together.

This is why one of the biggest advantages you can give your team is to enable them to make data-driven decisions in real time. In short, your job is to increase the overall team intelligence so they can self organize and self correct to be better. Just like sports teams now use data both to using data to create strategies and make in game real time decisions, so can software teams use data for optimum performance.
In this presentation we outline ways to track team performance measurables of:
- Speed: something far more in depth and nuanced than velocity alone
- Accuracy: how well the developers are building product that matches with the vision – otherwise resulting in story churn or re-work
- Quality: what’s the right balance between the other two elements to make sure the product is not causing significant bottlenecks in QA, or re-work that was avoidable. and finally
- Joy: how to use team polling to get the pulse on key components of teamwork along the way to surface issues before they become curveballs and go off the rails.
